Matsuoka Hachiman Shrine
~A shrine associated with Shiseido founder Arinobu Fukuhara~
The “pine tree” that is said to be the origin of the place name Matsuoka
It is said that the place name “Matsuoka” comes from the presence of a large pine tree. The photo appears to be from the early Showa period. Apparently, this pine tree was damaged by the pine beetle in 1952, and it was decided to cut it down.
On the other hand, there is also a theory that when entering the festival at Awa Shrine, mikoshi from various places gathered to meet up, so the name changed from Matsuoka'' to
Matsuoka”.
